Day Three – Tour 112331572, 3-Day Tour to San Francisco / Sacramento / Coloma

REVISED UPDATE: GROUP SEEMS AHEAD OF SCHEDULE: ESTIMATE ARRIVAL TIME AT School is 9:15 PM Flight has landed. Group is enroute by bus to the School. As you can tell our flight is on time. Here’s hoping our busses will be in Long Beach when we arrive. NO SCHOOL tomorrow! Yippee!! Catch some of excitement earlier today from the pictures shown below: Today was beautiful day in the rolling hills east of Sacramento for our visit to the place where the HUGELY important California Gold Rush began. Here’s some of group at the sawmill replica.  James Marshall found a nugget in the tail race back in Jan. 1848. This is not the actual mill site or structuure but a replica of where gold was discovered in Coloma. This is pretty much a perfect replica. The real one burned down, and the American River changed course a few times. But we get the idea! The group did some scenic hiking at the top of the hill overlooking Coloma and the American River.  You see some of them here at the statue of James Marshall at the top of the hill. Panning for their own gold is a highlight. During the Wagons HO! Program, students learn about the issues, practical concerns, and the challenges of making the ambitious trek to California during wild and wooly times of the Gold Rush. Next stop was a visit to Sutter’s Fort.  The wilderness outpost that turned into the comforting destination for those brave enough to harken to the cry, “Go West Young Man, Go West!” – Here...

Day Two – Tour 112331572, 3-Day Tour to San Francisco / Sacramento / Coloma

Students bids farewell to “The City by the Bay” and heads east to our very Capital destination. But not without an “energy” stop and tour of the Jelly Belly Factory on the way. 🙂 Portrait of California’s only governor to become president of the United States made entirely of Jelly-bellies. A little bit of rain on the SVCS parade, but it didn’t dampen any spirits. A great visit of the California State Capitol building. Outside the California State Capitol, SVCS students pause to pay respect at the Vietnam Memorial. The rain did not hamper our visitation of the significant memorials and monuments here on the Capitol grounds. The one room yellow School House in historic Old Town Sacramento. There’s clearly no way to get out away from learning on this trip! SVCS students enjoying a classroom session circa 1854. No one got their hand slapped as they were all attending to their 3 R’s. Group orientation before touring the California State Railroad Museum. Look Out! Kids – there’s a huge railroad train on the...

Gathering at John Wayne Airport for group departure … 4th graders on their way to a grand adventure. We’ll keep this blog updated as we move to each new event. San Francisco, here we come! … The students were great passengers on the plane flight. Big smiles ready for a big edventure. Well, it certainly looks like the students are READY and Excited to go inside the Exploritorium! And they’re not the only ones. Love that enthusiasm! The exhibits are very “hands on.” Science is a lot of fun when you don’t think of it as science. The boys experiment with string waves they never “node” about before. This experiment allows you create and play with a special class of waves called standing waves. There they are … your 2011 4th grade SVCS teaching DREAM TEAM – – great smiles and ready for some cool educational moments to capture the imaginations of their classes here at the Exploritorium. Oh, yum. This is a classic treat on Pier 39. A delicious Sour Dough Bread Bowl. So good! A large Civil War era canon. Students are excited to embark on their next leg of the journey. A trip across the bay to the Infamous Island of Alcatraz. They certainly seem to have no concerns as to whether they can escape! These happy SVCS travelers seem unconcerned as they begin their cruise and get closer and closer … to prison! Well, this proves it once and for all. One of the first...
