DAY SIX: Tour 111330954, Washington, D.C. 6-Day Tour
FLIGHT # 217 IS DEPARTING ON TIME from JFK Just before the MASSIVE hailstorm hit, students enjoyed a ‘light-show’ room at the Top of the Rock. It was hailing too much to get pix of the ice-skating rink, but the kids did get to view the action. We did get to go back to the hotel for a quick swim! As I write this, Jet Blue flight 217 to Long Beach is ‘on time’ and all systems are GO. Kids are really tired and will arrive home ready to rest. It’s been great! One more quick pix of the girls relaxing in front of an Egyptian temple. Doing a great job of smiling, but I know they are tired! Yes! We woke up this morning to winter in New Jersey! We are on our way to Liberty Island! The adventure continues….and it is snowing….or at least slushing!!! On the New York ferry from Ellis Island. Three sailors endure driving rain enroute to their immigration processing at Ellis Island. Matt talks to Red Hill about 9/11 and the building that is now going on at the Twin Towers site. Students pay respect to Abraham Lincoln by placing pennies on his statue in the Gettysburg Cemetery. Kari McCollum reads the Gettysburg address on the exact spot where Abraham Lincoln gave his famous speech. After our 4 hour visit to Gettysburg, we picked up some bag lunches and headed for NEW YORK! We drove into New York City to the sounds of Frank Sinatra. After a quick, very quick, too quick dinner at John’s Pizzeria….we headed for ‘the theatre’, where we saw ‘Wicked’! DAY THREE: Tour 111330954, Washington, D.C. 6-Day Tour
The morning began with a driving rain, but after breakfast we were blessed with clear skies and an appointment at the Pentagon….no pictures here. Two wonderful servicemen gave us a 1 hr tour of America’s military center. We stood at the spot where Flight 77 hit the building. Our next stop was Ford’s Theatre, the site of Abraham Lincoln’s assassination. Part of our visit was to a museum underneath the theatre. Very Cool. Mrs. Sampson was so excited to show us the art she loves. We got to see the only painting by Leonardo DaVinci in the Western Hemisphere. It is oil on wood. Ginevra’s face displays the delicate translucence of porcelain. Perhaps an engagement portrait. It is shown below: Weather stayed perfect for our long walk from the motorcoach to the Capitol. DAY TWO: Tour 111330954, Washington, D.C. 6-Day Tour
Because of change in plans Red Hill will be going to the Pentagon tomorrow. So……we took the opportunity to enjoy the bright sky and visit Lafayette Park and get a class pic outside the White House. The President is in Brazil so he wasn’t able to come out and vist. 🙂 Next stop will be a photo Op at the Washington Monument….then off to Mt. Vernon. Cool, but beautiful today. Although we were not able to go up to the top of WaMo yesterday……Red Hill did get to stop at the monument this morning to walk the grounds and get a photo op. You can tell what an incredible day we are having weather-wise. Our time with the Washington’s has been wonderful. Smiles everywhere! kids are awesome, asking excellent questions! Students and chaperones have lunch together with the president, or at least his memory, at the Mount Vernon cafe! Red Hill students listen attentively to our ‘monuments’ guide, John Lee, as he lectures about the Korean, Lincoln, Vietnam, Jefferson, and WWII monuments. It is not yet dark, but the walking tour will soon be dark, as well as...
